Cocooned in the Western Ghats, the town has vast
stretches of spice plantation, reserve forested areas and jaw-dropping
landscapes. Conveniently located stopover between Bangalore and Kochi,
Wayanad is also one of the few places where one can sight wildlife in
their natural habitat.
This green paradise is blessed with the most enchanting waterfalls,
historical caves, comfortable resorts and home stays. There are not many
shops and restaurants in the region, making sure that the mesmerizing
charisma and peaceful silence is maintained. It is a perfect place to
sojourn for any travellers who wants to enjoy a soulful retreat.

Getting There
Air: Kozhikode (90 km) has the nearest airport and
daily Jet and Indigo flights are available from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata,
Chennai and Hyderabad. Tickets are very economical (Rs 2,000-4,000).
Train: Kozhikode (90 km) has the nearest rail head
for Wayanad. Daily trains are available from Delhi (Mngla Lksdp Exp),
Mumbai (Kerala S Kranti), Hyderabad (Ypr Cannanore Exp), Chennai
(Mangalore Exp) and Bangalore (Ypr Cannanore Exp).
Bus: Regular buses ply between Wayanad to Kozhikode
(90 km, 2 hours, Rs 250 for deluxe bus), Bangalore (290 km, 6 hours, Rs
400 for semi-deluxe) and Kochi (200 km, 4 1/2 hours, Rs 300 for
semi-deluxe buses).
Car: Taxis and private vehicles are one of the most
common means of travel to Wayanad. The most popular route is Bangalore –
Mysore – Gundulpet – Munthanga – Sulthan Battery. The roads are in
excellent condition. Taxis can charge anywhere between Rs 5,000-8,000
for a round trip. Takes around 6-7 hours.
For tourists coming from North India (Delhi, Mumbai and
Kolkata) the best option is to take a direct flight or train to
Kozhikode and continue the onward journey by bus or taxis.
When To Go
The climate of Wayanad remains pleasant all though the year.
Summers
(March to May) are good times to visit as the temperature remains
around 30°C along with cool breeze, making it ideal for sight seeing.
Winters
(October to February) are also good months for honeymoon, as the
temperature remains around 15°C. Winters are also good for those who are
looking out for adventure options.
Monsoon (June to September)
are good for nature lovers as the greenery is at its best during these
months. However, the area receives very heavy rainfall, therefore
adventurers better avoid these months. Tourists generally avoid visiting
Wayanad during the monsoons, as few attractions are also closed.
Eat & Drink
Wayanad has decent options of eating as well. Most of the
restaurants are located inside the resorts and remain open from morning
till 11 in the night. The in-house resorts are mostly multi-cuisine and
offer various vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian options at a moderate
price.
Nice Cafe located on the highway to Kalapetta, offer quick snacks and drinks at a cheap price.
Shopping
This beautiful town also boasts of a few local shops selling
variety of things. The most indispensable item tourists should not miss
purchasing includes spices and handicrafts made from coconut shells,
ivory, canes, wood and metals. Wayanad is equally popular for its
handlooms. There are not many shops per say and most of the souvenirs
can be bought from the local vendors who are lined up near the famous
attractions of the region.
History
Wayanad, has been a powerful seat of the Vedic Tribes during
the pre historic times. Historians claimed that the city has a long
history that can be traced back to even ten centuries before Christ.
Various evidences like the caves of Ampukuthimala, relate the city to
have been present since the beginning of the New Age Civilization.
The recorded history of the city can be dated back to 18th century when the Pazhassi Rajahs of
Kottayam
royal dynasty ruled the city. Then, the city fell into the hands of the
erstwhile King, Hyder Ali. During the reign of Tipu Sultan, the city
was handed back to Kottayam Royal dynasty.
After the truce of
Srirangapatna,
Tipu Sultan handed over the control of the Malabar region to the
British. As a result, a fierce battle was fought between the British and
the Kerala Varma Pazhassi Rajah of Kottayam. Though the king fled but
he continued guerilla fights against the British, till his death.
The British hence ruled the city of Wayanad till India’s independence in
1947. After the formation of Kerala in 1956, Wayanad was declared to be
a part of the Kannur district. Later, it was added in the
Kozhikode
district of Kerala. For proper development of the people and city, the
northern and southern part of Wayanad were brought together and merged
as the present district of Wayanad on 1st of November, 1980.
Travel within city
Wayanad has many local travel options that one can choose
from. Like other parts of Kerala, government bus services are numerous
in this city. Travelers can also opt for local auto rickshaws and cabs.
The nearest airport as well as the railhead is at Kozhikode. Cab
services from Kozhikode to Wayanad are also available.
Taxi
Many of the hotels in the city have arrangements with the local cabs and
taxi services. These are usually mini vans or small cars. They may not
be comfortable but they are cheap and quick way to get around the city.
They cost approximately Rs 100 for short trips in the city center while
for longer trips they may charge per km which is usually around Rs 13
per km. However, the rates can be negotiated and taxi drivers usually
reduce the prices after bargaining.
Rented Cycle
Other local travel options include hiring cycles on an hourly basis.
They are cheap and a good way to travel around the city. Cycles cost
around Rs 50 per hour and the climate makes it an ideal way to travel
around the city. However, they may not be available after dark and can
be used only for short distances.
Edakkal Caves

These pre-historic caves are famous for their rock and
wall carvings. Located at a distance of 25 km from Kalpetta, the cave is
96 ft long and 22 ft wide. Tourists need to indulge in a one and half
hour long trek from Eddakal town to reach the entrance of the caves. The
roads are in good condition and in order to reach the actual cave,
tourists will have to trek uphill for another 45 minutes.

Kuruva Dweep

Situated on the tributaries of river Kabani, Kuruva Island
is known for its ethereal natural beauty and varieties of flora and
fauna. The island is surrounded by thick evergreen forests and is ideal
for enjoying a calm and peaceful retreat away from the maddening crowds.

Banasura Sagar Dam

Banasura Sagar Dam, located about 25km towards the
north-west of Kalpetta is the largest dam in India and second largest in
Asia. Surrounded by the bounty of nature, it is an ideal picnic spot.
Apart from its scenic surrounding, boating and other water recreational
activities are also available.
Chain Tree
Chain tree is a large Ficus tree, a popular attraction tourists can enjoy on their way to Wayanad.
Sulthan Bathery
Sulthan Bathery, earlier known as Ganapativattom is a
major tourist attraction in Wayanad. It is a worth visiting place if you
are looking to have some peaceful time in amidst calm surroundings.
Excursions
The quaint town of Kalpetta is surrounded by thick
coffee plantations & picturesque mountains, all adding up to its
scenic beauty. Other than being a nature lovers delight, it is also a
place where pilgrims come to pay homage at its several temples.
From the famous Sri Maha Vishnu temple, which is one of the few
temples dedicated to Vishnu to the Grammam Devi temple; popular among
the local women; to the temple dedicated to the most revered deity of
the region Lord Ayappa, the Ayappa Swamy temple located on the outskirts
of the city & adding to its diversity is the prevalence of several
Jain temples too, makes this place a pilgrimage of sorts.
The surrounding natural beauty is yet another feature bringing
people to Kalpetta. The cascading waterfalls of Soochipara, Meenmutty
& Kanthapara are all located in close proximity - making it an ideal
spiritual - natural beauty combo!

Chembra Peak

Chembra Peak is the tallest peak in all of Wayanad
district. It is at a staggering height of 2100 meters above sea level.
This peak is especially popular with both mountain climbers and trekkers
alike. The panoramic views of the Wayanad are rather breathtaking, and
the beautiful mountain lake at the top is impressive as well.

Meenmutty Falls

The most impressive water fall that can be found in the
Wayanad district is Meenmutty Falls. Gurgling down from a height of 300
meters, it falls in 3 separate tiers. Reaching the falls involves a 2 km
trek, but the view of the falls, makes it worth the effort. During the
monsoons, this waterfall can be enjoyed only from a distance, due to the
voluminous level of water. Trekking is a good option to explore its
surroundings, but considering the rugged and undulated terrains, taking a
guide along is advisable.

Soochipara Falls

One of the prime attractions in Wayanad district, the
Soochippara waterfalls also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfall, is a treat
for travelers. Gushing from a height of 300 feet, the pool formed at
the end of the waterfall is apt for swimming, bathing and rafting. An
ideal picnic for families & couples alike.
Mananthavady is a small town located on the banks of
the River Mananthavady. The town is located in the Wayanad District of
Kerala. The town once ruled by a person called Raja Pazhassi, is the
place where he was laid to rest. Hence, a the tomb of Raja Pazhassi is
one of the most important heritage places in the town. Valiyoorkavu is a
small temple that is located around 3 km from the town and this is one
of the most important temples in the area, especially among the tribal
people in the region.
The other places of interest in the region are, Thirunelli
Temple an important pilgrim center is located around 36 km from the
town, Mananthavady Park, Malakari Temple & the Brahmasthan Temple,

Begur Wildlife Sanctuary
Begur Wildlife Sanctuary is located at Mananthavady which
is 20 km from Wayanad. The Wildlife Sanctuary is home to deers, tigers,
elephants, leopards & boars along with a large variety of birds. The
best season to visit is during December to May.

Pazhassi Raja Tomb
Pazhassi Raja tomb is a memorial of the Pazhassi Raja who
was seen as the lion of Kerala. Pazhassi Raja organized a guerilla type
of warfare against the British in ancient days and he is remembered for
his valor. In remembrance of him, his mortal remains was laid to rest
in the Pazhassi Raja tomb. He was cremated in 1805 after the warfare
against British East India Company. A park in the memory of Pazhassi
Raja is present here.

Located in the Wayanad district of Kerala, Vaduvanchal
is a haven for adventure lovers. Lying among the high ranges of the
Western ghats, the town is on the Calicut-Ooty road, around 10 km from
Meenmutty Falls. The town is extremely popular for its coffee, tea,
rubber and vanilla plantations and offers great opportunities for
trekking and mountain climbing.

Situated to the north of Wayanad district of Kerala in
the Bramagiri Hill is the temple of Thirunelli. Thirunelli was once a
famous trade center and a major pilgrim centre, despite of being located
in a remote valley surrounded by forests. The temple has many
archeological sites in and around the complex, and recent evidence has
shown the existence of two villages near the temple which can be dated
back to 9th & 10th century.
It is believed that a dip in the Papanasini, a small stream located a
kilometer away from the Thirunelli temple will cleanse all body
impurities. Nearby the temple pond named as Panchateertham, there are
many carvings and sculptures which are worth admiring.

Panchatirtha
Located to the south of the Thirunelly temple in the
Wayanad district is the Panchathirtha, a holy pond. Panchathirtha is a
blend of two words Pancha meaning five and thirtha meaning the rivers.
It is believed that the splendid lake encompassing the five tirthas of
Sankha, Chakra, Badma, Gatha and Sreepaada tirthas met at this point
hence acquired the name Panchathirtha. Thus, a visit to Tholpetty is
incomplete without taking a dip in the waters of this holy lake.
Papanashini
Close to the Thirunelly temple in the Wayanad district of
Kerala is the Papanashini River. A holy dip in the water of this river
is believed to wash away all worldly sins of people making them pure and
prosperous. All the tourists and devotees never miss an opportunity to
visit Papanashini River.
